The Grand Bazaar at a glance

The Grand Bazaar, called Kapalıçarşı in Turkish, is a historic covered market in Beyazıt in Istanbul's Fatih district. It is a working market, not a museum with one collection. Jewelers, textile and carpet dealers, ceramics and lamp makers, spice and copper traders and cafés share a network of vaulted lanes and old courtyards called hans.

Entry is free and you need no reservation for an ordinary visit. A guided tour is a separate, optional service. For a first walk, plan about 1 to 2 hours, and more if you want to shop. A private shopping walk of 6 to 7 hours was priced at €180 per person for two people (net, plus 20 percent VAT, €432 in total) in 2026.

This guide covers the opening hours, the gates and layout, what to buy, fair bargaining, tours, food tours, lamp workshops, the neighboring Spice Bazaar, the history, directions, the best time to go and where to stay nearby.

A few things to know before you go

Short answers to the questions visitors ask most often.

Closed on Sundays

The bazaar is open Monday to Saturday from 08:30 to 19:00. It is closed on Sundays and on religious holidays. Individual shops may keep their own hours inside that frame, so 08:30 does not mean every shop is serving yet.

The numbers depend on how you count

The market has around 18 to 22 gates, more than 60 streets and lanes, and roughly 3,000 to 4,500 shops, depending on how you count. Treat these as a rough size, not an exact inventory.

Roofs and hans are different places

The roof of the Grand Bazaar can be visited in small, controlled groups. That does not mean you can climb the roof of the Büyük Valide Han. Some hans in the district are being restored, and trade continues, but not every floor or workshop is open to visitors.

Tax free needs a few steps

Tax free shopping applies to goods worth more than TRY 1,000 excluding VAT, bought at an approved shop. Take the printed e-invoice, show the goods and the invoice to customs when you leave, and export within 3 months.

Combine the bazaar with the old city

Other sights have their own guides.

The bazaar sits a short tram ride from the main sights of the old city. For the Hagia Sophia and other Istanbul sights there is a separate guide, and the Blue Mosque and other old city visits have theirs. This site stays with the market and its surroundings.
