The short answer
The easiest way to reach the Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) is the T1 tram. Get off at Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı, or one stop earlier at Çemberlitaş. From Sultanahmet that is one stop to Çemberlitaş or two stops to Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı. The bazaar sits in the Beyazıt area of the Fatih district, on the old city side of the Golden Horn.
Visiting the market is free and needs no ticket. It is open Monday to Saturday from 08:30 to 19:00 and closed on Sundays and religious holidays, so plan your trip for a regular opening day. Details are on the opening hours page. If you would rather not work out the route yourself, some Istanbul city tours that include the Grand Bazaar start from a meeting point such as your hotel.

By tram: the T1 line
One line covers most of the old city.
The stops in order
In the old city the T1 runs Eminönü, Sirkeci, Gülhane, Sultanahmet, Çemberlitaş, Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı and Laleli-İstanbul Üniversitesi. Ride in the direction of Bağcılar when you come from Eminönü, Sirkeci or Sultanahmet.
How long it takes
The whole T1 line from Kabataş to Bağcılar takes about 65 minutes. That figure does not apply to the short hop to the bazaar. From Sultanahmet you pass one stop to Çemberlitaş or two stops to Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı, and from Sirkeci it is four stops. Trams can be crowded, so allow some extra time.
Which stop to choose
Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı puts you at the Beyazıt side of the bazaar. Çemberlitaş is the stop before it. Both work. Pick the one that matches the gate you want, which the gates and layout guide explains.
From Sirkeci or Eminönü
Sirkeci station and the Eminönü waterfront both have T1 stops, so ferry and train arrivals connect easily. The Spice Bazaar is in Eminönü, which makes the T1 a handy link between the two markets. See the Spice Bazaar guide.

By metro: M2 to Vezneciler
There is no metro station inside the bazaar. The nearest option is the M2 line between Yenikapı and Hacıosman, at the Vezneciler station (İstanbul Üniversitesi). From there you walk to the bazaar through the Beyazıt area. The M2 is useful if you start in a district such as Taksim or Şişli, or if you arrive by the airport metro and change at Gayrettepe.
The Beyazıt side has the square, the university gate and the tower, so the walk is easy to follow. The bazaar's Beyazıt gate carries the tuğra (monogram) of Sultan Abdülhamid II, which helps you recognise it. The Nuruosmaniye gate on the other side shows the Ottoman state coat of arms.

From the airports
Both airports connect to the old city by rail, with a change on the way.
| Start | Route | Walk at the end |
|---|---|---|
| Istanbul Airport (IST) | Airport metro to Gayrettepe, then M2 toward Yenikapı to Vezneciler. A Havaist shuttle (HVL-1) goes to Aksaray Metro as another option. | Yes, from Vezneciler through Beyazıt |
| Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) | M4 from the airport toward Kadıköy, change to Marmaray at Ayrılık Çeşmesi, continue to Sirkeci, then T1 to Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı | Short, from the tram stop |
| Sultanahmet | T1 toward Bağcılar, two stops | Short, from the tram stop |
| Sirkeci or Eminönü | T1 toward Bağcılar | Short, from the tram stop |
The rail links to the airports are being extended. Check the current timetable and route map before you travel, and allow time for the changes and the final walk. For most visitors who sleep in the old city, the T1 is the simplest route, with no change at all.
Fares in 2026
The tram and metro fares below are for 2026. Fares rose in summer 2026, from TRY 42.00 to the current full fare of TRY 46.20.
| Item | Price in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Full fare, one ride | TRY 46.20 |
| Student fare | TRY 22.55 |
| Social fare | TRY 33.08 |
| İstanbulkart (the card itself) | TRY 165 |
| BİRgeç single-use product | TRY 65 |
The TRY 165 is the price of the card, not credit on it. Do not assume that foreign children or students qualify for the reduced fares, and do not assume that airport metro or Marmaray rides cost the same flat tram fare. Check the amount on the ticket machine before you pay.

Taxi, walking and arriving at the gate
What to expect on the last stretch.
By taxi or hotel transfer
Do not plan on being dropped at a specific gate. Traffic around the bazaar is managed, and rules can change. Ask for Beyazıt or Çemberlitaş and walk the last part.
On foot from Sultanahmet
You can combine the bazaar with a visit to Sultanahmet on foot, but the walking time depends on your route and pace. If you want a fixed plan, use the T1 for the stretch between the two. The history of the bazaar is a good read for the way.
At the entrance
Expect a possible bag or security check at the gates. There is no ticket and no booking for a normal visit.
Sultanahmet's major sights have their own guides: see getting to the Blue Mosque area for the Sultanahmet side of the trip.
