The Büyük Valide Han at a glance
The Büyük Valide Han stands on Çakmakçılar Yokuşu in the Mercan trading district, close to the Grand Bazaar but not part of it. It was founded by Kösem Mahpeyker Valide Sultan, the mother of a sultan, in the first half of the 17th century. A han is a merchants' building arranged around a courtyard, with storage and trade on the lower floor and rooms or workshops above.
The best way to see it is on foot, as part of a walk through the old trading quarters. A guided Grand Bazaar tour that includes the nearby hans gives you the context, and some Istanbul workshops are held in historic inns of this kind, for example a mosaic lamp workshop in an old Ottoman inn. Treat the Valide Han as a working building and be respectful of the people who use it.

Tours through the Grand Bazaar and the old hans
Guided walks and private shopping tours that cover the covered market, its hans and the Spice Bazaar, with live prices and availability.
What to see at the han
The interest is in the architecture and the working life.
The entrance and courtyard
The han opens onto an inner courtyard, as hans were designed to do. It is the part to see first and the main reason to go.
The galleries
Upper galleries run around the courtyard and give views over it. Access to the upper levels can change, so ask politely at the entrance.
The workshops
Hans have long housed small workshops. Looking is fine, but workshops are places of work, so ask before you photograph people.
The setting
The han sits among other trading buildings on a steep street. Walk the neighbourhood as part of the visit, not just the one building.
Visiting hours are not fixed, so plan to see it as part of a longer walk rather than as a fixed stop. Come on a Monday to Saturday, when the neighbourhood is working.
History
The han was founded by Kösem Mahpeyker Valide Sultan, one of the most influential women of the Ottoman court. Construction is dated between 1623 and 1640, in the time of Murad IV, and some dates run to 1651. The han is best described as a 17th century building.
For the wider story of how trade grew around the Grand Bazaar, read the history page. The hans were part of that system: they gave merchants a place to store and sell goods near the covered market.

The roof question
Plan your visit around the courtyards.
Do not plan around the roof of the Büyük Valide Han. The roof was closed to visitors from June 2016, and a dome collapsed on 30 December 2017. There is no regular roof visit you can book, so the courtyards and workshops are the reason to go.
The roof of the Grand Bazaar itself is a separate matter. Some guided tours include controlled small-group visits to that roof. They have nothing to do with the Valide Han.
Other hans nearby
The Valide Han is one of many. These are the most useful ones to know.
| Han | Area | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Zincirli Han | Near the Mercan gate | A courtyard with shops below and workshops above. Hours are usually 09:00 to 19:00, closed Sundays; check before you go. Protective works began in September 2026 on 78 rooms, which does not mean the whole han is closed. |
| Çuhacı Han | Beyazıt | Founded by Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Paşa, dated 1701. |
| Kürkçü Han | Mahmutpaşa area | Founded by the grand vizier Mahmud Paşa in the time of Mehmed II. It has two courtyards. |
For most visitors, the best combination is the Valide Han courtyards and Zincirli Han in one morning, followed by the Grand Bazaar.
