Grand Bazaar opening hours at a glance

The covered market is open Monday to Saturday from 08:30 to 19:00. It is closed on Sundays and on religious holidays. The hours are the same in summer and winter, so the same frame applies all year.

Shops inside the bazaar are run by individual traders. They can keep their own hours within that frame, so 08:30 does not guarantee that every shop is already open and serving. Arrive a little later if you want to browse in full swing, or earlier if you want to see the lanes quiet.

If you want to see the bazaar with a guide and need a fixed time, look at the Grand Bazaar tours. A tour booked for a Sunday needs a changed route, because the market itself is closed.

Religious holidays 2027

These are the calendar dates of the two main festivals. The bazaar is closed on religious holidays.

HolidayEve (Arefe)Festival days
Ramadan Festival (Ramazan Bayramı)8 March 20279 to 11 March 2027
Feast of the Sacrifice (Kurban Bayramı)15 May 202716 to 19 May 2027

The fasting month of Ramadan begins on 8 February 2027. The month itself is not a holiday closure, the closing days are the festival days listed above. By law the Ramadan Festival including the eve from 13:00 counts as 3.5 days and the Feast of the Sacrifice as 4.5 days. That is the legal holiday frame and does not tell you at what time a particular shop closes on the eve, so ask at your hotel or check on the day.

National holidays

Fixed dates every year.

Fixed dates

1 January, 23 April, 1 May, 19 May, 15 July, 30 August and 29 October (Republic Day). These are public holidays. Do not assume the bazaar follows the same pattern on every one of them, and check on the day.

Republic Day, 29 October

The holiday begins at 13:00 on 28 October. The law asks private workplaces to close on 29 October, so do not plan a normal shopping day on that date.

Plan around closing days

If your trip falls on a festival, put the bazaar on a different day and use the closed day for the old city. The best time page shows how the seasons and holidays fit together.

Other markets and sights nearby

Hours differ from the bazaar.

The Spice Bazaar in Eminönü is a separate market. It is open from 08:00 to 19:30, seven days a week, so it can be open when the Grand Bazaar is closed. Do not apply the Grand Bazaar's hours to it, and check the day before holidays. The same goes for a han such as the Büyük Valide Han: it has its own access and no hours that match the bazaar. A short tram ride away you will find the Hagia Sophia, which has its own visiting rules.

For most visitors, a weekday morning in the bazaar followed by the Spice Bazaar in the afternoon works best, and the Spice Bazaar is the better choice for a Sunday.

Grand Bazaar hours: frequently asked questions

Is the Grand Bazaar open on Sundays?

No. The bazaar is closed on Sundays. Use the Spice Bazaar, which is open seven days a week, or the sights of the old city instead.

What time does the Grand Bazaar close?

At 19:00 from Monday to Saturday. Plan your last purchases for the late afternoon.

Is the Grand Bazaar open during Ramadan?

The fasting month is not a closure period. The bazaar is closed on the festival days at the end of Ramadan and for the Feast of the Sacrifice. Individual shops may keep their own rhythm, so check on the day.

Are the opening hours different in summer and winter?

The hours do not change between summer and winter, so the same Monday to Saturday frame applies all year.

Does every shop open at 08:30?

No. Shops keep their own hours within the bazaar's frame. Some open later, so allow a little time before you expect everything to be running.

Is grand-bazaar.org the official website of the Grand Bazaar?

No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the bazaar's management, its traders' association or the city.
